Antibiotic A-23187, 4-Bromo is a divalent cation-specific, ionophoretic antibiotic that acts as a channel for cations such as Mn2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. In addition, this antibiotic is produced by Streptomyces chartreusensis to combat against gram-positive bacteria. Studies suggest that Antibiotic A-23187, 4-Bromo is widely used to increase intracellular free Ca2+ concentration in cells. Furthermore, Antibiotic A-23187, 4-Bromo promotes the equilibration of [Ca2+] gradients between cellular compartments, including the ER, mitochondria and cytosol. In axons, a modest mitochondrial depolarization is amplified in the presence of A-23187 and is suppressed in the absence of extracellular Ca2+.
