Visinin-like protein 3 (VILIP-3) is a member of the visinin/recoverin subfamily of neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) proteins, which are characterized by their ability to bind calcium ions. These proteins are predominantly expressed in the nervous system and are implicated in a variety of intracellular signaling pathways that are activated by changes in calcium concentration.
VILIP-3 shares structural similarities with other NCS proteins, including an EF-hand motif that is essential for its calcium-binding capability. Upon binding calcium, VILIP-3 undergoes a conformational change that allows it to interact with other molecules and participate in signaling cascades. These interactions can influence numerous cellular processes such as neurotransmitter release, neuroplasticity, and neuronal survival. The precise functions of VILIP-3 are not fully understood, but it is thought to play a role in neuroprotection and the modulation of synaptic activity. Its expression patterns and involvement in calcium-mediated signaling suggest that VILIP-3 could be important for the proper functioning of neural circuits and may be involved in the pathophysiology of certain neurological disorders.
