UBF, or Upstream Binding Factor, is a pivotal protein in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells. Primarily known for its role in the transcription of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, UBF plays a central role in the formation and functioning of the nucleolus. It is a member of the high mobility group (HMG) protein family, characterized by containing HMG-box domains that allow for DNA binding. Through its DNA-binding capability, UBF is able to recognize and bind to the upstream control element (UCE) and the core promoter region of the rRNA genes, thereby initiating the transcription process.
