TTC1, standing for Tetratricopeptide Repeat Domain 1, is a human protein encoded by the TTC1 gene. The protein is characterized by the presence of tetratricopeptide repeats (TPRs), which are motifs that facilitate protein-protein interactions and are often involved in the assembly of multiprotein complexes. These TPR domains are known to mediate a variety of functions, including cell cycle control, transcriptional regulation, mitochondrial and peroxisomal protein transport, neurogenesis, and chaperone activity.
TTC1 is ubiquitously expressed in various tissues and is implicated in the cellular stress response. It interacts with heat shock proteins (HSPs), which are a group of proteins upregulated in response to stress and are essential for protein folding, repair, and degradation processes. Through its interaction with HSPs, TTC1 may help to stabilize protein conformation under stress conditions, thus protecting cells from damage. The exact physiological roles of TTC1 are still being explored, but it is thought to be involved in maintaining cellular homeostasis, particularly under conditions that can cause protein misfolding or aggregation. Given its involvement in protein quality control, TTC1 may be relevant in the study of diseases characterized by protein misfolding, such as neurodegenerative diseases.
