RRP22 Activators

RRP22, or Ribosomal RNA Processing 22 Homolog, is a protein that is encoded by the RRP22 gene in humans. This protein is a component of the small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein (snoRNP) complexes, which are essential for the processing and modification of ribosomal RNA (rRNA). RRP22 is involved in the maturation of the 18S rRNA, a critical component of the small ribosomal subunit. The role of RRP22 in rRNA processing is crucial for the proper assembly and function of ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis. In the complex and highly regulated process of ribosome biogenesis, RRP22 and other snoRNPs contribute to the chemical modification and cleavage of precursor rRNA molecules, leading to the formation of mature rRNAs. These modifications often include the methylation of specific nucleotides and the conversion of uridines to pseudouridines, enhancing the structural and functional properties of the ribosome.

RRP22 is localized to the nucleolus, the subnuclear structure where ribosome synthesis occurs. In the nucleolus, RRP22 associates with snoRNAs and other protein components to form snoRNPs that specifically recognize and modify rRNA precursors. These modifications are not only essential for ribosome activity but also contribute to the accuracy of translation and overall cellular homeostasis. The precise function of RRP22 in rRNA processing and its interactions with snoRNAs and other snoRNP components are areas of active research. Dysregulation of ribosome biogenesis, including processes involving RRP22, can have profound cellular consequences and has been associated with several human diseases, including cancer and ribosomopathies, a group of disorders characterized by defects in ribosome biogenesis and function.
