MRP-L22, also known as Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein L22, is a protein that is encoded by the MRPL22 gene in humans. As its name suggests, MRP-L22 is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome, which is responsible for the synthesis of proteins within the mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles in cells.Mitochondrial ribosomes are different from their counterparts in the cytoplasm, both in structure and in the proteins they contain. MRP-L22 is part of the large subunit (39S) of the mitochondrial ribosome, which joins with the small subunit (28S) to form the complete ribosome.
MRP-L22, along with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins, plays a critical role in the assembly and function of the mitochondrial ribosome. It contributes to the process of translating mitochondrial DNA-encoded mRNA sequences into proteins, most of which are essential components of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. This chain is responsible for oxidative phosphorylation, the process that generates the majority of the cell's ATP, the main source of cellular energy.Alterations in the MRPL22 gene or the MRP-L22 protein can affect mitochondrial function and lead to mitochondrial diseases.
