KRTAP10-10 Activators

Keratin-associated protein 10-10 (KRTAP10-10) is a member of a family of proteins known as keratin-associated proteins (KAPs), which are encoded by a cluster of genes within the KRTAP gene family. This protein is expressed in the hair follicles and is an integral component of hair fibers.KRTAP10-10 is characterized by its high cysteine content, which is a hallmark of many KAPs. This high cysteine content allows for the formation of a large number of disulfide bonds, contributing to the extensive cross-linking with other hair proteins, particularly keratins. These disulfide bonds are critical for providing the structural rigidity and resilience typical of hair fibers. Consequently, KRTAP10-10 plays a significant role in determining the physical properties of hair, such as strength, flexibility, and response to humidity.

The precise amino acid sequence and structure of KRTAP10-10, as well as its interactions with other proteins like keratins, affect the texture and quality of hair. Variations in the KRTAP genes can lead to differences in hair texture between individuals and across different populations.Research on KRTAP10-10 and other KAPs extends to understanding the genetic basis of hair disorders as well as normal hair variation. Mutations or alterations in the expression of KRTAPs may result in changes to hair structure that can manifest as hair disorders.
