KIR4.2 Activators

Potassium inwardly rectifying channel, subfamily J, member 15 (also known as KCNJ15 or Kir4.2) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the KCNJ15 gene. It is part of the large family of potassium channel proteins, which are crucial for various cellular processes, including maintaining cell membrane potential, regulating cell volume, and signaling.KCNJ15, specifically, belongs to the subfamily of inwardly rectifying potassium channels. These channels allow potassium ions to move more easily into the cell than out, helping to stabilize the resting membrane potential and control the duration of the action potential in neurons.

The KCNJ15 channel is predominantly expressed in the kidney, specifically in the proximal tubule and the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. These regions are involved in the reabsorption of solutes and water from the urine, contributing to the regulation of body fluid volume and electrolyte balance. In terms of disease association, studies have found that variations in the KCNJ15 gene can affect susceptibility to Type 2 diabetes, particularly in certain populations. For instance, some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the KCNJ15 gene have been associated with increased risk of Type 2 diabetes in East Asian populations.
