Nomilin, found in the rhizomes of Atractylodes lancea, is a sesquiterpene lactone that exhibits various beneficial properties. This yellowish-brown crystalline powder, belonging to the bicyclic sesquiterpene lactone class, has demonstrated notable anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-cancer effects. Soluble in ethanol and methanol but not in water, Nomilin interacts with numerous biochemical and physiological processes, including inflammation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. Moreover, it modulates the activity of enzymes such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and lipoxygenase (LOX). In animal studies, Nomilin effectively reduced inflammation and alleviated pain. It also exhibited anti-allergic properties by suppressing the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. Notably, Nomilin displayed anti-cancer effects, inhibiting tumor growth in transplanted models. In cell-based studies, Nomilin induced apoptosis in human leukemic cells, reduced the release of inflammatory mediators in human bronchial epithelial cells, and triggered cell death in human colon cancer cells. Although the precise mechanism of action for Nomilin remains partially understood, it is believed to operate by inhibiting specific enzymes such as COX-2 and LOX. Additionally, Nomilin may impede the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1β).
