Cyclocreatine is a creatine analog that is able to passively transit across membranes including the blood brain barrier. Cyclocreatine is phosphorylated and dephosphoryated by mitochondrial and cytosolic creatine kinase. Cyclocreatine can regulate creatine biosynthesis by suppressing the level of arginine: glycine amidinotransferase. Cyclocreatine also is a protectant against inhibition of cardiac mitochondrial respiration.
