7,8-Dihydro-α-ionone is one of many phenolic compounds found in the Squirting cucumber and thought to contribute to the plant′s antioxidant effects. In agriculture, it is used as a natural insecticide and repellent. 7,8-Dihydro-α-ionone may act to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha and IL-6, and increase the levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as SOD and CAT. It also modulates the activity of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, which are involved in mood regulation and cognitive function.
