Proscillaridin A is a cardiac glycoside which functions as a specific Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor. It is reported that at high concentrations, above 300nM, Proscillaridin A can increase intracellular Ca2+ concentration, activate caspase-3, and induce apoptosis in human fibroblasts. However, in low concentrations Proscillaridin A can activate the proliferation of fibroblasts. Studies suggest that it inhibits both topoisomerase I and II activity simultaneously resulting in cytotoxicity of MCF-7 cells (sc-2206). In addition, Proscillaridin A is more effective at MCF-7 cell proliferation than other cardiac glycosides such as digoxin and ouabain (sc-201548).
