Nidulin is a depsidone produced by several fungal species with potent and selective antibacterial activity. While literature relating to nidulin is limited, it is closely related to folipastatin and unguinol identified as inhibitors of phospholipase A2, arachidonic acid release from rat polymorphonuclear leukocytes and nitrendipine binding to porcine heart membrane. While showing some calcium blocking attributes these metabolites have potential as anti-inflammatory agents. It effectively targets M. tuberculosis, M. ranoe, T. tonsurans, and M. audouini. It demonstrates inhibitory effects on methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) growth (MIC = 4 µg/ml) and shows larvicidal activity against Artemia (LC50 = 2.8 µg/ml). Nidulin displays cytotoxicity towards MOLT-3 cells (IC50 = 21.2 µM) while being non-toxic to HuCCA-1, HepG2, and A549 cells (IC50s = >112.7 µM). It inhibits aromatase with an IC50 value of 11.2 µM. Nidulin, a depsidone derived from A. nidulans, possesses a wide range of antimicrobial properties.
