Beclomethasone, a synthetic glucocorticoid. Beclomethasone exerts its effects as a 17alpha-hydroxy steroid, specifically as a substituted form of prednisolone where chlorine and a methyl group replace hydrogens at the 9alpha and 16beta positions, respectively. Operating through a comprehensive mechanism of action, beclomethasone first attaches to cell surface receptors and subsequently enters the nucleus. Once inside the nucleus, it binds to specific nuclear receptors, thereby activating them. This activation leads to altered gene expression, ultimately culminating in the inhibition of proinflammatory cytokine production. Notably, beclomethasone belongs to the corticosteroid family, characterized by its properties as an 11beta-hydroxy steroid, 17alpha-hydroxy steroid, 20-oxo steroid, 21-hydroxy steroid, corticosteroid, glucocorticoid, 3-oxo-Delta,Delta-steroid, chlorinated steroid, primary alpha-hydroxy ketone, and tertiary alpha-hydroxy ketone. Its derivation can be traced back to prednisolone, and it is a derivative of a hydride of a pregnane.
