11H-Benzo[a]fluorene (11H-B[a]F) is a type of heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (HAH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that can be found naturally in the environment as well as in certain manufactured products. Belonging to the benzo[a]fluorene family of PAHs, 11H-Benzo[a]fluorene is known for its carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic properties. Extensive research has been conducted on 11H-Benzo[a]fluorene to explore its potential toxicity and its ability to create persistent organic pollutants in the environment.Scientists have utilized 11H-Benzo[a]fluorene in various studies to investigate its detrimental effects on humans, animals, and the environment. These studies have focused on understanding the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, and teratogenesis. Furthermore, 11H-Benzo[a]fluorene has been employed to examine the toxic impacts of other PAHs and evaluate the potential health risks associated with PAH exposure.Notably, 11H-Benzo[a]fluorene is recognized as a mutagen, carcinogen, and teratogen. Its mode of action involves multiple mechanisms, including the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the inhibition of DNA repair enzymes. Additionally, studies have demonstrated its ability to bind to DNA and modify the expression of genes involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis.
