Alkanethiols are commonly used as SAMs because of their alkane backbone or tail group, and the S-H head group that has a strong affinity for noble metals. Dithiols are especially useful because of the possibility of linking the two thiol ends to metal contacts. This has implications for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).
