Growth Arrest Specific 2 Like 1, commonly abbreviated as GAS2L1, is a member of the GAS2 family of proteins which are known for their role in the regulation of the cell cycle and cytoskeleton organization. This evolutionarily conserved protein family is characterized by the presence of a Gas2-related domain that interacts with microtubules and is implicated in the coordination of cell proliferation and apoptosis.
GAS2L1 itself is particularly interesting due to its involvement in the stabilization of the microtubule network as well as its role in cytokinesis, the final step of cell division where the cell splits into two daughter cells. The protein is thought to localize to the spindle apparatus during mitosis, and its activity is crucial for the proper alignment and segregation of chromosomes.
The structure of GAS2L1 includes a calponin homology (CH) domain that mediates binding to actin filaments, and a Gas2 domain that is associated with microtubule plus-end tracking (+TIPs). This allows GAS2L1 to act as a cross-linker between actin filaments and microtubules, a function that is essential for maintaining the integrity and dynamics of the cytoskeleton. Furthermore, GAS2L1 may also be involved in cellular processes that require cytoskeletal remodeling, such as cell migration and adhesion.Research has shown that GAS2L1 can be regulated by various cellular signals and may be subject to post-translational modifications that alter its function. Aberrations in the expression or function of GAS2L1 have been suggested to play a role in certain pathological conditions, including cancer, where it may affect tumor cell growth and metastasis.
