The acronym LETM stands for "Leucine Zipper-EF-hand containing Transmembrane." LETM1, for instance, is an integral mitochondrial inner membrane protein that has been implicated in the regulation of mitochondrial volume and ion homeostasis, specifically in the transport of K+ and H+ ions. Mutations in LETM1 have been associated with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects many parts of the body.
