Glycogenin-2 (GYG2) is a protein encoded by the GYG2 gene in humans. It is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the initiation of glycogen biosynthesis, a process where glucose is converted into glycogen for energy storage in cells, particularly in the liver and muscle tissues.Glycogenin-2 is classified as a self-glycosylating enzyme. It catalyzes the attachment of glucose monomers to itself, creating a short glucose polymer or primer that serves as a starting point for the addition of further glucose units by the enzyme glycogen synthase. This process ultimately leads to the formation of a glycogen molecule, a large, branched polymer of glucose that is the main storage form of glucose in the body.
Two forms of glycogenin exist in humans: Glycogenin-1 (GYG1), primarily expressed in muscle cells, and Glycogenin-2, found mainly in the liver. While both enzymes perform similar functions, their separate locations suggest they may be regulated differently or have subtly different roles.Mutations in the GYG2 gene can lead to glycogen storage diseases, rare genetic disorders characterized by the abnormal storage or metabolism of glycogen. These diseases can lead to a variety of indicators, including muscle weakness, liver damage, and hypoglycemia.
