Silybin is an inhibitor of a wide variety of proteins, many of which are heavily involved in xenobiotic efflux and metabolism. Silybin is an inhibitor of P-glycoprotein-mediated cellular efflux and also inhibits xenobiotic oxidation by the CYP (cytochrome P450) superfamily of enzymes. This helps to contribute the apoptotic activity of this compound, which may act to be effective against a wide variety of cancer cell lines. Silybin is an inhibitor of 5-LO.
