Piperacillin sodium is a broad-spectrum antibiotic related to penicillin that is active against many common bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It binds to certain enzymes in the bacterial cell wall and prevents them from forming the peptidoglycan layer, which is for cell wall integrity. This leads to cell death. Piperacillin sodium is a concentration-dependent bactericidal agent with a wide range of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
