Ethyl cellulose (EC) is a biodegradable polymer derived from cellulose that possesses non-toxic properties and is insoluble in water. As a cellulose ether, Ethyl cellulose finds widespread utilization across multiple industries. In scientific research, Ethyl cellulose demonstrates remarkable versatility. It serves as a lubricant in chromatography and a stabilizer in emulsions and suspensions. Moreover, Ethyl cellulose acts as a binder in tablet and capsule manufacturing, a protective coating for food products, and a binding agent in adhesive production. Notably, ethyl cellulose also serves as a stabilizing agent in the production of emulsion polymers and as a film-forming agent for medical device coatings. While the exact mechanism of action of ethyl cellulose remains not entirely elucidated, its effectiveness is attributed to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. This capability enables the creation of a protective layer around active ingredients, safeguarding them from degradation and extending the product′s shelf life. Additionally, ethyl cellulose acts as a barrier between the active ingredients and the environment, shielding them from moisture and other detrimental external factors.
