Urotensin IIB (UIIB) is a peptide that belongs to the urotensin family, which is known for its involvement in various physiological processes. UIIB is encoded by the gene UTS2B and is structurally related to urotensin II (UII), sharing similar biologic activities. Both UII and UIIB are recognized as the ligands for the G-protein-coupled receptor GPR14, also known as the urotensin-II receptor (UT).UIIB, much like UII, is a cyclic peptide that has been identified in several species and is implicated in the regulation of cardiovascular function, including vasoconstriction and vasodilation, depending on the vascular bed. The binding of UIIB to its receptor UT activates complex intracellular signaling pathways that involve the mobilization of calcium ions, activation of protein kinase C, and modulation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). This can lead to pronounced effects on smooth muscle tone and is thought to contribute to the modulation of blood pressure and cardiac function.
Moreover, urotensin peptides, including UIIB, are involved in other physiological functions beyond vascular regulation. They have been implicated in the pathophysiology of several disorders, such as heart failure, hypertension, and kidney disease. UIIB's role in these conditions is thought to be related to its potent vasoactive properties, which can affect hemodynamics and organ perfusion.Despite its potent biological activities, UIIB is less studied compared to UII, and much of its functional roles and mechanisms of action remain to be fully elucidated. Nonetheless, UIIB's interaction with the UT receptor and its involvement in cardiovascular regulation make it a peptide of interest, particularly in the context of cardiovascular research and targets for various cardiovascular diseases.
