Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein U11/U12 subunit 25, also known as SNRNP25, is a protein encoded by the SNRNP25 gene in humans. This protein is an integral component of the U11/U12 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) that are part of the minor spliceosome complex. The minor spliceosome is responsible for the removal of a subset of non-canonical introns, called U12-type introns, from pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) transcripts in eukaryotic cells. Although these U12-type introns are less common than the major U2-type introns, their accurate splicing is essential for the proper processing of certain genes implicated in crucial cellular functions. The SNRNP25 protein specifically associates with the U11 and U12 small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), which are key elements of the U11/U12 di-snRNP complex within the minor spliceosome. This complex recognizes and binds to the 5' splice site and the branch point sequence of U12-type introns, facilitating the assembly of the spliceosome and subsequent splicing reactions.
The precise molecular function of SNRNP25 within the U11/U12 snRNP complex is not completely elucidated. Still, it is thought to contribute to the stability and proper assembly of the complex. This is crucial because any defects in the minor spliceosome components, including SNRNP25, can lead to aberrant splicing and have been linked to various human diseases, ranging from retinitis pigmentosa to certain cancers.Studying SNRNP25 and its interactions within the minor spliceosome not only deepens our understanding of RNA splicing but also sheds light on the intricate regulation of gene expression and the potential consequences of splicing defects on human health.
