超氧自由基阴离子是线粒体呼吸的一种有毒副产物，有氧生物代谢的氧气中大约有 1-4% 会产生超氧自由基阴离子。SOTS-1 是一种偶氮化合物，可在水溶液中以恒定、可控的速率热分解产生超氧自由基阴离子。更具体地说，SOTS-1 在热分解过程中会形成一种中间体，这种中间体会在扩散受控的极限范围内与氧气发生反应，生成超氧自由基阴离子。SOTS-1 向中间体的衰变遵循一阶动力学，在生理 pH 值和温度下的半衰期为 4900 秒。
