Irinotecan hydrochloride trihydrate is a potent inhibitor of topoisomerase I, an enzyme involved in DNA replication and transcription. Irinotecan hydrochloride trihydrate exerts its cytotoxic effects by stabilizing the cleavable complex formed by topoisomerase I and DNA, leading to DNA damage and ultimately cell death. Irinotecan hydrochloride trihydrate is a derivative of camptothecin, a product isolated from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata.
