Deferoxamine Mesylate, an iron chelator, has been found to inhibit thymidine incorporation in cell cultures which is antagonized by iron supplementation. Iron has been reported to be involved in the control of enzymatic activities that regulate DNA synthesis in cells. This compound has also been reported to induce apoptosis by causing chromatin condensation. Additionally, Deferoxamine Mesylate demonstrates the ability to induce p53 and cell accumulation in the G1 phase of cell growth and increase p21 mRNA levels without any detectable protein products. Furthermore, studies suggest that this agent is capable of activating HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor 1α), consequently causing transcription of numerous genes that are associated with hypoxia. Deferoxamine Mesylate is an inhibitor of Prolyl Hydroxylase.
