Ribosomal Protein S26, often abbreviated as RPS26, is a protein component of the ribosome, specifically associated with the 40S subunit of eukaryotic ribosomes. Ribosomes are essential cellular machines responsible for protein synthesis, translating messenger RNA (mRNA) into amino acid sequences to form proteins.RPS26 is one of the many ribosomal proteins that form the complex structure of the ribosome. Defects in ribosome biogenesis can lead to various cellular dysfunctions and diseases.Mutations or dysregulation of RPS26 have been associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA), a rare congenital disorder characterized by reduced red blood cell production. This association underlines the importance of RPS26 in normal cellular and physiological processes.Research into RPS26 has also provided insights into the mechanism of "nonsense-mediated mRNA decay" (NMD), a cellular process that degrades mRNAs containing premature stop codons. RPS26 has been shown to play a role in NMD, highlighting its function in maintaining the fidelity of protein synthesis and the quality control of gene expression.
