ADMP, or Anti-Dorsalizing Morphogenetic Protein, is a member of the TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor-beta) superfamily of secreted signaling molecules, which play critical roles in development and homeostasis in multicellular organisms. It is encoded by the gene ADMP. This protein functions as a morphogen, a type of substance that can dictate the fate of cells in a concentration-dependent manner during embryonic development.
ADMP is particularly important in early vertebrate embryogenesis, where it has a crucial role in the establishment of the dorsoventral axis, a fundamental body plan feature that distinguishes the back (dorsal) from the belly (ventral) side of the organism. It operates by counterbalancing the effects of other TGF-β family members, such as BMPs (Bone Morphogenetic Proteins), that promote dorsal cell fates. By doing so, ADMP helps to refine and maintain the correct distribution of cell types along the dorsoventral axis.The mechanism of ADMP action involves its interaction with specific receptors on the cell surface, leading to the activation of SMAD proteins, which then translocate to the nucleus and regulate the expression of target genes. This cascade is part of intricate regulatory networks that control cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis.
