D-(+)-Xylose is classified as a monosaccharide of the aldopentose type, which means that it contains five carbon atoms and includes a formyl functional group. Xylose contributes to lignocellulose in plants. Xylose is predominantly found in hardwoods and agricultural residues. D-(+)-Xylose is enzymatically converted to various intermediates, which are utilized as carbon sources for energy production via several metabolic pathways, including the pentose phosphate and Dahms pathways. Commonly been used as a starting material in the commercial biosynthesis of the non-caloric sweetener xylitol, as well as biofuels, such as ethanol.
