Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. The antibiotic spectrum of kanamycin covers Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, targeting pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In laboratory experiments, it serves as a tool for selecting bacterial mutants and investigating gene expression and regulation mechanisms. In addition, it contributes to the investigation of bacterial physiology, covering the regulation of protein synthesis and the impact of antibiotics on bacterial metabolism. It is also useful in investigating the expression and regulation of genes in mammalian cells, as well as in assessing the effects of antibiotics on human cells. Kanamycin prevents the production of proteins in bacterial cells. By binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, it obstructs the formation of a functional 70S ribosome. Consequently, bacterial protein synthesis is interrupted, leading to inhibition of bacterial growth.
