Trimethylamine N-oxide is a mediator of thiol-sulfide conversion as well as a decarbonylation and demetallation for organometallic compounds. Inhibits protein synthesis by blocking ribosomal RNA transcription and translation. Found to be involved in the regulation of the metabolism of nitrogen-containing compounds.
