Tetracycline phosphate complex is a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces aureofaciens that is useful in an array of bioassays. The antibiotic functions by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of microbial ribosomes inhibiting protein synthesis via blocking the attachment of charged aminoacyl-tRNA. In addition, studies suggest that the effects of Tetracycline phosphate complex are reversible upon removal of the antibiotic. However once Tetracycline phosphate complex has entered the cellular environment it does not readily leave. Furthermore, resistant cells either do not allow the antibiotic entry into the cell or they are able to eject the antibiotic out of the cell before the concentration reaches toxic levels. Alternatively, Tetracycline phosphate complex functions as a marker for bone growth and estimating bone reabsorption rates, since Tetracycline can be absorbed by bone tissue and tagged using fluorescence.
