Tetrabutylphosphonium chloride (TBPC) is a quaternary ammonium salt that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis and has a wide range of applications in the fields of biochemistry and materials science. It acts as a catalyst for the synthesis of organic compounds and as a reagent for the isolation and purification of biomolecules. Tetrabutylphosphonium chloride acts as a cationic surfactant, which means that it interacts with the negatively charged components of cell membranes. This interaction disrupts the membrane structure, leading to the release of intracellular components and the influx of extracellular molecules. Therefore, Tetrabutylphosphonium chloride can increase the permeability of cell membranes and facilitate the uptake of DNA into cells. It also increases the solubility of hydrophobic compounds.
