Sodium metasilicate nonahydrate can be utilized in the preparation of honeycomb porous silicon (hp-Si). When combined with cobalt chloride (CoCl2.6H2O), it can be used to synthesize Co3O4 nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are effective in imparting flame retardant and antimicrobial properties to jute textiles. In addition to these applications, sodium metasilicate nonahydrate acts as a surfactant in water treatment and a food additive. It exhibits the ability to reduce the surface tension of water, thereby enhancing cleaning efficiency. Moreover, it has been employed for removing heavy metals from wastewater, such as potassium dichromate and sodium citrate. Furthermore, sodium metasilicate nonahydrate reacts with hydroxides of metals like sodium carbonate and glycol ethers to form soluble silicates.
