QUICK LINKS

Quinidine sulfate dihydrate is a compound that functions as a class I antiarrhythmic agent. It acts by inhibiting the fast inward sodium current in cardiac tissues, which results in a decrease in the rate of depolarization and a decrease in the excitability of the heart. Quinidine sulfate dihydrate prolongs the action potential duration and the effective refractory period in cardiac tissues, leading to a decrease in the conduction velocity of the heart. Quinidine sulfate dihydrate blocks the delayed rectifier potassium current, which further contributes to its antiarrhythmic effects. At the molecular level, Quinidine sulfate dihydrate interacts with ion channels in cardiac cells, altering their function and ultimately leading to the suppression of abnormal electrical activity in the heart.
