Piperonyl butoxide is a non-toxic substance that acts as a synergist to enhance the effectiveness of insecticides, such as carbamates, pyrethrins, pyrethroids, and rotenone, by inhibiting the mixed-function oxidase (MFO) system of insects. This system is responsible for breaking down insecticides and acts as the natural defense mechanism of the insect. By inhibiting this system, piperonyl butoxide can promote higher levels of insecticide and reduce the required dosage for lethal effect.
