Penitrem A, a potent neurotoxin produced by, but not necessarily derived from, several species in the genus Penicillium, displays a capacity to have numerous effects on ion channels and neurotransmitter release. This compound has also been reported to inhibit binding of [125I]charybdotoxin (ChTX) to maxi-K channels in bovine aortic smooth muscle sarcolemmal membranes. Additionally, Penitrem A shows the ability to induce an increase in the voltage and frequency of electrical activity recorded from the cerebral cortex. Penitrem A is an inhibitor of MaxiKalpha.
