M-Chloramphenicol (m-CAP) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and a synthetic derivative of chloramphenicol, a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces venezuelae. Extensive laboratory studies have been conducted on m-Chloramphenicol, focusing on the effects of antibiotics on bacterial growth and testing the efficacy of new antibiotics. It has also been employed to investigate the impact of antibiotics on the development of antibiotic resistance. M-Chloramphenicol functions by inhibiting bacterial growth, primarily by obstructing the production of certain proteins necessary for bacterial proliferation. More specifically, m-Chloramphenicol hinders the production of a protein known as peptidyl transferase, which is essential for bacterial protein synthesis. This inhibition of protein synthesis ultimately results in bacterial death.
