Isosorbide 2-Nitrate is a nitrate ester that functions as a vasodilator in experimental applications. It acts by releasing nitric oxide, which then activates guanylate cyclase in smooth muscle cells. This activation leads to an increase in cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels, resulting in relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and dilation of blood vessels. Isosorbide 2-Nitrate′s functional role in experimental applications is to induce vasodilation and reduce the workload of the heart.
