Ioxitalamic Acid, an organoiodine compound characterized by the substitution of an acetylamino group at position 3 and a (2-hydroxyethyl)carbamoyl group at position 5 on the 2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid structure, is a highly effective contrast medium widely used in medical imaging. As an ionic iodinated contrast medium, it belongs to the first generation of contrast media and exists as an ionic monomer with a high osmolarity of 1500-1800 mOsm/kg. Ioxitalamic acid is available in the market as sodium and meglumine salts, which were developed by Liebel-Flarshem Canada Inc and approved by Health Canada in 1995. Despite being introduced earlier, it remains a viable option and continues to be accessible as of the last review conducted in 2015. Primarily used as a contrast medium, it serves roles as a xenobiotic, an environmental contaminant, and a radioopaque medium. Additionally, it is classified as a dicarboxylic acid monoamide and belongs to the group of acetamides, organoiodine compounds, and benzoic acids.
