Etonogestrel is a biologically active metabolite of Desogestrel and a steroidal progestin. It binds to the progesterone receptor and activates the transcription of genes involved in the regulation of reproductive physiology. It also binds to other steroid hormone receptors, such as the estrogen receptor, androgen receptor, and glucocorticoid receptor, and can modulate the expression of genes regulated by these receptors. Etonogestrel has been used in a variety of in vitro studies to investigate its effects on gene expression, cell proliferation, and hormone production.
