Quinine sulfate is a compound that functions as a bitter-tasting alkaloid. It acts as a blood schizonticide. Its mechanism of action involves interfering with the parasite′s ability to digest hemoglobin, leading to the accumulation of toxic heme and subsequent death of the parasite. Quinine sulfate also disrupts the parasite′s ability to break down glucose, leading to a decrease in energy production and ultimately causing the death of the parasite. Quinine sulfate inhibits the nucleic acid synthesis of the parasite, further contributing to its antimalarial activity.
