Decadienal is an aldehyde product of lipid peroxidation in cell membranes. Decadienal has been described to covalently modify biological structures, producing adducts at nucleophilic residues on cytochrome c. Decadienal is demonstrated to increase p27 mRNA and protein levels and to increase mitochondrial oxygen consumption and increase mitochondrial lipid peroxidation. Decadienal is also described to produce oxidative damage to DNA and to produce bulky DNA adducts.
