D-7-Azatryptophan (D-7-ATP) is a novel, non-hydrolyzable analogue of the essential amino acid tryptophan, which has been developed as a research tool for studying the biological functions of tryptophan and its derivatives. D-7-Azatryptophan acts as a competitive inhibitor of tryptophan uptake by cells and inhibits the metabolism of tryptophan by blocking the activity of tryptophan-degrading enzymes. It may act to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and yeast strains. Additionally, D-7-Azatryptophan has been used to study the role of tryptophan in the regulation of inflammation and the immune response. Lastly, it is utilized as a valuable fluorescent probe for studying protein conformational changes, ligand binding, and protein-protein interactions.
