QUICK LINKS

Cresyl Violet acetate, with the CAS number 10510-54-0, is a synthetic dye belonging to the oxazine group and is widely recognized for its utility in histological staining rather than any medical or pharmaceutical applications. This chemical is particularly valued for its ability to provide sharp and distinct staining of nervous tissue, making it an essential tool in neurobiological research. The mechanism of action of Cresyl Violet involves binding to the components of neuronal cells, particularly the acidic components of cell nuclei and the rough endoplasmic reticulum, thereby staining them a vivid purple or violet. This staining property is crucial for the visualization of neuronal morphology and the examination of brain or spinal cord sections under a microscope. In research, Cresyl Violet acetate is extensively used in Nissl staining, a method employed to highlight Nissl bodies within the cytoplasm of neurons. These bodies are essentially aggregates of rough endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes, and their visualization is vital for studying neuronal structure, particularly in assessing changes that occur in neurodegenerative diseases or following neural injury. The application of Cresyl Violet in these contexts allows researchers to delineate the cytoarchitecture of the nervous system, facilitating detailed analyses of neural organization, pathology, and connectivity in various experimental and investigative studies.
