In organic synthesis this reagent is a very useful oxidant. Alkenes undergo dinitroxylation although this does depend upon the solvent that is used. This compound is a great alternative to the Nef reaction. This chemical is also useful for the synthesis of quinoxaline derivatives which are useful as DNA cleaving agents, dyes, and organic semiconductors. This chemical is also used to release organic ligands from metal carbonyls. Whereby the metal is oxidised, Carbon monoxide is producted, and the organic ligand is released. The salt consists of the anion [Ce(NO3)6]-2 and a pair of NH4+ counter ions. The ammonium ions are not directly involved in the oxidizing reactions of this salt.
