ASB-16 is a zwitterionic amidosulfobetaine detergent useful for solubilizing proteins visualized by 2D-electrophoresis. This zwitterionic nature allows for selective ion binding, with behaviors and interactions at the headgroup playing a significant role in micelle formation. Heat capacity changes upon micellization were smaller than expected from hydrophobic interactions alone, pointing towards additional stabilizing forces at the polar headgroup region. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments have confirmed the ellipsoidal shape of ASB-16 micelles, with an aggregation number significantly higher than that of other sulfobetaines. The increased solubilization produced by ASB-16 enables the identification of previously undetected membrane proteins.
