Antimycin A is an antibiotic that induces apoptosis and inhibits the mitochondrial electron transport chain from cytochrome b to cytochrome C1. Additionally, studies report that it causes damage to mitochondrial DNA, lipids, and proteins in cells treated with the antibiotic. Antimycin A may act to mimic cell-death-inducing Bcl-2 homology domain 3 and has been applied as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) generator to study biological systems. Research indicates that Antimycin A inhibits the cell growth of HeLa cells though apoptosis and blocks nitric oxide-induced apoptosis via inhibition of cytochrome C leakage.
