It functions by being metabolized to 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+), which selectively damages dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. 1-Methyl-4-Phenyl-1,2,3,6-Tetrahydropyridine, Free Base disrupts mitochondrial function and leads to oxidative stress, ultimately causing cell death. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent neuronal damage.
